Jazz Trumpet Journal #3 June 1991
During April of 1991, maybe it was May, trumpeters Randy Brecker and Arturo Sandoval both came through Los Angeles with their own groups, and were both gracious enough to speaks with us.. Randy was leading a quartet with at Catalina's Bar & Grill on Cahuenga Blvd. with Dave Kikoski on piano , and we spoke by telephone the next morning on a variety of topics. Arturo Sandoval, having just emigrated to the United States was on tour promoting his GRP debut release, "Flight To Freedom" appearing at the Vine Street Bar & Grill, and I interviewed him in his hotel room just hours before his opening night performance there.

Jazz Trumpet Journal #51 April 1995
Issue #51 for April of 1995, referred to by some as "the butcher cover," featured Maynard Ferguson's trumpet sidemen of the day, Frank Green and Joey Tartell who were in Los Angeles on tour with the boss and were nice enough to grant us interviews. I have included the entire cover for the benefit of the complete art work.
The premiere issue of Jazz Trumpet Journal, April 1991. I had just finished a big band bus tour along the east coast with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra with Henry Cuesta, Terry Gibbs, and Fran Jeffries. The gig became available to me by trumpeter Kerry Hughes, who left to play another gig. He had given private lessons to Roy Hargrove and still had his phone number. I called Roy and interviewed him by phone, but without the aid of a tape recorder, and so I had to write fast! When I returned home to L.A. in mid. March, my old day job at A-C Fasteners was waiting for me, on whose office typewriter and copier I produced this first issue featuring trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who had just finished his second LP for the BMG Novus label, Public Eye.
